Tech brief: HP's dual-core Xeons

Hewlett-Packard Co. has started selling a pair of desktop workstations based on the dual-core version of Intel's Xeon processor. Both the HP xw6400 and xw8400 are designed for high-end computing tasks, such as data visualization and content creation. The xw6400 was built to be energy- and space-efficient. In addition, HP launched a pair of mobile workstations. The HP Compaq nw8440 and nw9440 use Intel Core Duo processors, with 15.4- and 17-inch widescreen displays, respectively.

They're not terribly heavy, at 6 and 7.5 pounds, yet they carry high-end graphics capabilities in the form of ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 and Nvidia Quadro FX 1500M controllers. HP offers the power laptops with integrated fingerprint or smart-card readers.
