Labor needs Intranet search engine

The Labor Department is seeking industry input as it looks for a search engine capable of searching one of the agency's Apache-based Intranet portals.

In a recent notice, Labor said its Inspector General's Office needs a search engine capable of probing a variety of document formats, including Microsoft Word, HTML and Adobe Acrobat files.

The engine should be tailored for a small Web server containing about 20,000 documents but must be scalable up to at least 100,000 documents with the ability to 'crawl' common file types posted on most Web sites.

The engine will be managed by OIG and the system must be simple enough to be installed and implemented by support staff with general IT skills 'but lacking specialized Web-development expertise,' Labor said.

Responses are due July 20.

The notice may not necessarily result in a formal solicitation, the notice said.
