Calif. cities to get traffic sensors

Traffic.com has inked an agreement with the California Department of Transportation to install digital roadside traffic sensors in two metropolitan areas.
Sensors to be installed in San Jose and Sacramento will monitor about 1,000 miles of expressway lanes. Traffic.com's work with Caltrans dates to 2003, when it signed a pact to install sensors in Los Angeles. That project originated under Traffic.com's Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure Program contract with the Federal Highway Administration. The contract now falls under the Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Technology Innovation and Demonstration (TTID) program.
The San Jose and Sacramento sensor systems and associated services will be provided at no cost to local government agencies, according to Traffic.com. The company will pay for the construction, operational costs and ongoing maintenance of the sensors as part of the Federal Highway Administration-funded TTID initiative.
Traffic.com generates revenue from sensor deployments in a number of ways. The company sells Web, e-mail and voice advertising to national advertisers such as Lexus, Home Depot and Ford, the company said. Traffic.com also sells its traffic data to mobile device manufacturers, Internet portals and satellite radio providers for broadcast and in-car navigation systems, according to the company.
Traffic.com said it will reinvest a portion of the revenue to expand the sensor system.
The company said it plans to place its latest batch of sensors along major expressway portions of I-280, I-680 and U.S. 101 around the San Jose area and portions of CA 99, I-5, I-80 and U.S. 50 near Sacramento. The company aims to complete the deployment by the end of 2007.
