Kolodner is interim health IT coordinator

The Health and Human Services Department today named Robert Kolodner interim national coordinator for health IT.

Kolodner has been chief health informatics officer at the Veterans Affairs Department's Veterans Health Administration and involved with the oversight and development of MyHealtheVet, a health portal for veterans to access health information, tools and services via the Internet, and VistA, the VA's electronic health records systems.

'He joins us at a time when we are making steady progress in advancing the president's health IT initiative, and his experience in patient care, health IT, and government will be invaluable to those efforts,' said HHS secretary Mike Leavitt in a statement this afternoon.

David Brailer, the first national coordinator for health IT, resigned earlier this year after two years of crisscrossing the country to drum up support and excitement for health IT. Brailer continues to serve as vice chairman of the American Health Information Community, a public-private partnership that makes recommendations to HHS on facilitating standards for health IT. Kolodner also is active in AHIC.

Kolodner has been instrumental in establishing the Bi-directional Health Information Exchange, which lets VA and the Defense Department view clinical data from both VA's Computer Patient Record System and DOD's Composite Health Care System in real time and bidirectionally.

Kolodner earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and a medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine.
