HHS sees personalized care through health IT, genomic data

The Health and Human Services Department seeks information about accelerating personalized health care through health IT and genomic information in population and community-based health care delivery systems.

Advances in health IT are occurring in parallel with advances in molecular and genetic medicine, which will let health providers be increasingly patient-specific by taking into account individual differences in health states, disease processes and outcomes from interventions, HHS said today in its posting.

The practices may improve health care through new approaches for predicting disease risk at an early time point, enabling preemption of disease processes prior to full manifestation of symptoms and analyzing the effectiveness of different interventions in specific populations based on their genetic makeup.

HHS wants input from public and private organizations about their plans for developing and using health IT and genetic and molecular medicine, in particular to incorporate the capacities in evidence-based clinical practice, health outcomes evaluations and research. For example, HHS seeks anticipated approaches for using electronic health records and databases from population and community-based health care systems for longitudinal data collection to address disease susceptibility, clinical outcomes and treatment response.

Responses are due Jan. 2.
