BlackBerry MVS ' A step toward unified communications

Research in Motion (RIM) introduced yesterday the BlackBerry Mobile Voice System, an enterprise solution that will allow the BlackBerry device to integrate seamlessly with an office desk telephone through a PBX system.
The new BlackBerry Mobile Voice System ' introduced at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium in Orlando, Fla. ' utilizes an MVS client on the device, an MVS connector on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite, which interfaces with PBX systems.
For the end user, the main advantage of the system is that you can place and receive calls using your BlackBerry just as if you were sitting at your desk. Caller ID is extended from your office phone to your BlackBerry, so those receiving your calls won't be confused. And mobile users will be able to access functions such as call transfers and extension dialing just as if they were 'inside' the PBX.
For system administrators, a major advantage of MVS is that IT policies can be extended to include the mobile telephone fleet. Among key security benefits is the ability to automatically authenticate mobile users to the PBX to help ensure that only authorized users and devices are accessing the corporate telephony system. Further, since calls are routed through the corporate PBX, any calls placed from a BlackBerry can now be logged or recorded for compliance with applicable corporate and regulatory requirements.
BlackBerry MVS is expected to be available later this month.
