DFAS enhances myPay security

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service has added a 'virtual keyboard' security feature to its myPay online payment system to augment the security of customers' personal identification numbers (PINs).

Customers will use the capability to enter their PINs each time they access the myPay system, DFAS said. The virtual keyboard will appear on customers' computer screens after they type their myPay LoginIDs into the system on regular keyboards. The feature will then prompt customers to enter their PINs using mouse clicks to 'press' keys on their screens.

The feature changes the layout or appearance of the virtual keyboard each time it appears to thwart hacking techniques used to capture or generate PINs, including Trojan horses, spyware and keystroke logging software, DFAS said.

DFAS will provide the feature beginning in mid-May. The system's other features will continue to operate as they always have, DFAS said. DFAS manages payments throughout the Defense Department, including payrolls and payments to contractors.
