Postini purchase shows Google's enterprise intentions

By purchasing hosted spam filter provider Postini, Google adds another tool in its growing collection of online office applications.

The acquisition 'reaffirm[s] our commitment to delivering hosted applications to businesses, and that means small businesses as well as larger businesses,' said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager, Google Enterprise.

Earlier week, Google announced that it would acquire Postini for $625 million acquisition.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based Google intends to add the Postini services, which include a wide range of data security and policy compliance capabilities, to its corporate-oriented Google Apps family of hosted applications, introduced in February. The company plans to offer a range of industrial-strength security, archiving, encryption and policy enforcement features for large organizations.

To date, most of Google's new clients have been small businesses. Bigger organizations are interested in the services too, but have more complex security needs. This factor was in part responsible for the Postini acquisition, according to Girouard.

'We've seen a significant amount of interest from large businesses as well, and this is one of the things driving our acquisition of Postini,' he said. Once the acquisition is complete, expected by the third quarter, the addition of Postini's data security and policy compliance capabilities to the Google Apps platform 'will make the transition to hosted services even easier,' Girouard said.

Google officials admitted that Postini's use in the federal government has been limited, though at least one agency has considered using Google's on-demand applications.
