Army reups Comtech for battlefield tracking

The Army has awarded Comtech Mobile Datacom Corp. a three-year, $605 million follow-on contract to continue supporting a satellite-based system that tracks vehicles on the battlefield.

Under the indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract, Comtech will provide hardware, spares, satellite bandwidth and related technical and professional services for the Army's Movement Tracking System. The company is based in Germantown, Md.

The hardware includes Comtech's MT-2012 satellite receivers, ruggedized and control station computers and installation kits. The professional and technical services consist of program management, engineering services, field service support and satellite network bandwidth services and related infrastructure.

Comtech also is responsible for providing around-the-clock services and customer support for the system's network operations center.

The new contract runs from Sept. 1, 2007, to July 12, 2010. Comtech won the original MTS contract in 1999.

MTS makes it possible for Army logistics personnel to track and communicate with vehicles in the field by using global positioning systems and two-way messaging technologies. Using the system, logistics personnel can pinpoint the location of MTS-equipped vehicles, track their movements and communicate with their operators.
