AdaCore updates avionics embedded development platform

Ada development software provider AdaCore has released the latest version of its development platform for writing embedded avionics equipment software, including one specifically tailored for Federal Aviation Administration information assurance guidelines, according to the company.
The GNAT Pro High-Integrity Edition for Servers for DO 178B was designed for building safety-critical avionics software to a level of assurance required by the FAA. It may also be used to develop software for other embedded uses.
This edition meets the Federal Aviation Administration's DO-278, a set of guidelines for using commercial off-the-shelf development to safely build airflight-related applications that meet DO 178B. DO 178B is a set of checks to guarantee to the reliability of airflight software.
The new development environment also meets the equivalent European information assurance standards as well, according to the company.
The Defense Department first commissioned the development of Ada in the late 1970s as a strongly typed object oriented programming language for industrial use. Although it was one of the first object-oriented programming languages, it has since been surpassed in popularity by new languages such as C++ and Java. A number of Ada users still exist in government, Robert Dewar, President of AdaCore, told GCN.
The new software runs on most major Unix platforms, including Linux, IBM/AIX, HP-UX and Sun Solaris.
