The Numerator on energy use

According to data center power equipment vendor Emerson Network Power, 60 percent of all electricity going into the data center goes to the information technology equipment itself, with the rest dedicated to cooling and lights. Contrary to popular belief, not all that power goes to servers. Here is how much each type of component draws.

Servers: 56 percent

Storage: 27 percent

Network equipment: 19 percent
