Sun, Fujitsu announce new Sparc servers

The next generation of Sparc enterprise servers is now available

Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu have announced the availability of the next generation of Sparc enterprise servers: the M4000, M5000, M8000 and M9000. The new line is based on the quad-core Sparc64 VII processor and the Solaris operating system.

The servers announced today build on existing systems co-designed by Sun and Fujitsu, representatives of the two companies said in a joint statement. These Sparc enterprise servers can mix Sparc64 VI and VII processors in a single domain. Customers can also minimize upgrade costs by using the new Sparc64 VII option in the Sparc enterprise servers they already have.

'At the heart of this change is the release of the new CPU,' said Richard McCormick, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu. Most significant is the increase in the number of processor cores, he added. 'There are two threads per core, so now an 8-thread system increases by quite a chunk the gigahertz speed.'

The new processor also consumes 44 percent less energy per core than the Sparc64 VI chip, McCormick said.

'There's no need for an expensive upgrade kit or new cooling system,' said Shannon Elwell, director of enterprise servers at Sun. 'Nothing like that.' Users can 'mix and match' the Sparc64 VI and Sparc64 VII, she said.

Pricing for the M4000 starts at $34,980, while the M8000 sells for $215,695.
