DOD launches scientific search site

Warfighters seeking scientific and technical information can now search across multiple repositories, using a new federated search service on the recently relaunched Web site for the Defense Department's Defense Technical Information Center.

The new site combines three formerly separate DTIC Web offerings: DTIC Search, the DTIC home page and the site for the agency's Public Scientific and Technical Information Network (STINET).

'This consolidation provides DTIC customers with a single point of entry to [science and technology] information," said R. Paul Ryan, DTIC's Administrator, in a statement. "While the new site includes users' favorite products and resources, enhancements have been made to improve navigation and provide access to more resources in one location.'

The integration of the three sites will allow users to search across more than 50 databases within one search. Not only can they search DTIC repositories, but they can also search data sources from more than 50 other countries, representing a total of 20 million documents. Other sites being searched include sites for Science.gov, the Library of Congress, World Wide Science.org and Scitopia.org.

The agency also established interest area pages that link to science and technology communities located elsewhere on the site.

Operating in conjunction with the Director, Defense Research and Engineering, DITC is the primary provider of scientific and technical information for the Defense Department.
