New Western Digital drives pack 500G

Western Digital announced that it has begun volume shipments of its WD Scorpio Blue 2.5-inch notebook hard drives with capacities up to 500G.

The 500G and 400G SATA hard drives are designed for laptop PCs and portable storage devices, the company said.

The hard drives have a 3 Gbps transfer rate and are the highest capacity 2.5-inch, 9.5 mm hard drives shipping yet, Western Digital officials said.

The company described the drives' new features, including:
  • WhisperDrive technology, which uses algorithms to make the Scorpio Blue hard drives quiet.
  • ShockGuard technology to protect the drive mechanics and platter surface to meet shock tolerance specifications for mobile and notebook applications.
  • IntelliSeek technology, which calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.

WD Scorpio Blue 500G is available for $219.99 and the 400G version is $189.99.
