Technologies to watch in 2009

Cloud computing and business intelligence are among the most important strategic technologies for 2009, according to a top 10 IT list compiled by research firm Gartner.

InfoWorld reports that most technologies on this year's strategic technologies list are the same as the ones included on last year's list: green IT, mashups, Web-oriented architecture and unified communications.

But cloud computing has taken on increased prominence since it because it offers organizations a way to have key services delivered to them through the Internet rather than through an in-house data center, offering built-in elasticity and scalability.

Business intelligence systems also are high on Gartner's list because they can report on and store key performance indicators to help managers and knowledge workers make smarter and more informed decisions.
