NOAA launches online library of marine sanctuaries

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has launched a new online public outreach program that presents a large multimedia collection of high-resolution photos and videos from the nation’s 14 marine sanctuaries.

The National Marine Sanctuaries Media Library database is fully searchable by keyword, category and location. The images are all tagged with a variety of information, including usage rights. Our informal survey found that the great majority of images are available for use by anyone for commercial or noncommercial purposes.

The National Marine Sanctuaries Media Library can be accessed here.

“This robust online library offers thousands of images from all 14 marine protected areas managed by NOAA,” said Michiko J. Martin, national education coordinator for NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. “Some of these images depict threats and human pressures on marine life in a compelling fashion that we hope will inspire ocean literacy and conservation.”
