Navy to reduce intranet portals

The director of Navy networks says the service will reduce its intranet portals from 59 to two by the end of the year, according to a report by

Rear Adm. David Simpson added that consolidating portals will help the Navy transition into Defense Knowledge Online (DKO) Web portal and its concomitant e-mail, social networking and teleconferencing abilities.

DKO currently has strong backing from the Army, the Defense Information Systems Agency and the Joint Forces Command. Simpson's comments could be an indicator the Navy may become the next full partner in DKO.
