Asigra launches FIPS-certified cloud backup platform

Asigra today announced the Asigra Hybrid Cloud Backup and Recovery software version 9.0, which lets users outsource backup to a public cloud, create a private cloud or use a hybrid.

This is the first backup and recovery software approved by the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Federal Information Processing Standard 140 certification for encryption, said Eran Farajun, Asigra's executive vice president.

Cloud computing is very different than the old mainframe backup systems, where data was contained in a data center, Farajun said. “Now the world is a lot flatter.” Data resides everywhere, on laptops in war zones or on President Barack Obama's Blackberry. And all that data has to be backed up, Farajun said.

Asigra lets users adopt cloud computing technology, either private, public or a hybrid. The company doesn’t require users to decide between managing the backup process themselves or outsourcing it to a cloud services provider, Asigra said.

The Asigra platform reaches out over the network to perform agentless backup of physical and virtual operating systems, applications and databases, using industry standard protocols and programming interfaces, the company said.
