Cisco enters tablet market
Videoconferencing capabilites set the Cius apart from the pack

The increasingly crowded tablet market welcomed a new offering last week when network hardware giant Cisco announced the Cius, a tablet computer designed for business.
Weighing in at 1.15 pounds with a 7-inch display, it’s a little smaller and lighter than an iPad. The device sports an Intel Atom 1.6-GHz processor and 32G flash memory, runs on the Android operating system and will be able to run the thousands of apps in the Android Market.

But what seems to set the Cius apart from its tablet rivals is its videoconferencing capabilities. The Cius employs a whole suite of Cisco’s teleconferencing products, including Cisco’s Unified Communications, Quad Collaboration platform, WebEx Collaboration Cloud, Cisco TelePresence, and Cisco Show and Share social video system.

The Cius has dual cameras, the better to see us as we videoconference. One camera faces forward, with zoom functions and 30 frames per second video; the other is a high-resolution camera that faces the back and captures 640-by-480 video and still images.
A docking station, the HD Soundstation, gives users support for displays, USB drives, Bluetooth devices, headsets, keyboards and speakers. The Cius also has an eight-hour battery life.
Bruce Klein, senior vice president of Cisco’s public sector, said that the Cius’ collaborative features could be especially useful for workers in health care, education and public safety.
Physicians could take the Cius on their rounds, securely accessing medical records and consulting with other physicians using Cisco TelePresence, he said. Teachers could use it to create video and review their students’ videos. Public safety workers could use it to track supply deliveries in emergencies.
