2012 outlook for mobile data traffic

This year, the number of mobile-connected devices will exceed the world’s population, according to a forecast by Cisco, continuing a trend that will help push global mobile data traffic to 10 exabytes in 2016. In that same period, according to Cisco’s recent Visual Networking Index, handsets will exceed 50 percent of data traffic, tablets will surpass 10 percent of global mobile data traffic, and China will account for 10 percent of all global mobile data traffic.

In its forecast, Cisco looked at developments driving the growth, including device diversification, growth in average traffic per device and the explosion in mobile video traffic. Mobile data traffic more than doubled in 2011 and will double again this year, momentum that has “persisted despite global economic uncertainties, the broad implementation of tiered mobile data packages and an increase in the amount of mobile traffic offloaded to the fixed network.”
