Popular DOD desktop app ready for mobile devices

A widely used Defense Department Web application is now available for mobile devices. The Defense Information Systems Agency’s Defense Connect Online allows users to host and attend meetings from their Android smart phones and tablets.

The application also provides Web conferencing, presence and awareness, and chat capabilities.

The DCO app is the mobile version of a Web-based meeting tool that was initially launched in 2008 as a pilot program to provide DOD with a real-time collaboration tool, said Mark Mills, vice president and DCO program manager at Carahsoft.

The desktop application has since taken off across the department, with more than 640,000 people currently using it, he added.

DCO is built around Adobe Connect and Cisco Jabber as a chat function. The mobile app allows users to remotely set up and manage meetings and share information from their mobile devices over unclassified networks, Mills said.

The next step is to make DCO mobile available for iOS smart phones and tablets, Mills said. Users with iOS devices can currently use Adobe Connect to access DCO meetings, but the goal is to have a branded version of the application available to users soon, he said.

The DCO mobile application is available for free download at the Google Play site.

How wonderful for DISA! A feather in your cap for the progress you have made and that we in the AIr Force don't realize at operational levels ...at least not immediately. I have like the poster from DC yet to see a smart phone employed! Why is is so difficult for DISA and the services to work hand-in-hand from development to employment of these "simple" solutions that the rest of industry has no trouble employing? Yes, I know, we're special. The inefficiencies between our agencies is pathetic. Great for you DISA. You got another PR feather in your cap but it does little to excite me at the operational unit levels!

DCO has been actively used by the military since 2007. Anyone supporting DIMHRS or now IPS-A will tell you DCO works. DCO supports online conference calls and supports file sharing between all participants from desktop. No special devices required. With limited travel funds DCO allows interactive exchanges to continue requirements. One option in DCO is Desktop sharing, a great way to demonstrate application testing. After you use DCO, check out AMERDEC Safe site. A great tool for file sharing.

Walter –Defense Connect Online has been around since 2007, and currently has more than 640,000 users across DoD. It is a free service provided by DISA, available to all DoD users (military, govt civilians and contractors) with a valid CAC and a .mil email address. To create your own account you can register at this site: https://www.dco.dod.mil. The mobile client was released earlier this month and is just starting to gain a lot of traction. We conducted a webcast on May 22nd regarding this topic and had almost 100 participants join the session, many of them via mobile devices. Please let me know if you would like demonstration of the DCO service or need more documentation regarding the mobile app. (dco@carahsoft.com)

I would like to know who is using this, because I work for DoD and no one here has heard of this. My office has over 1,000 people in it and we are discouraged from using our own IT for work and we have no android phones or touchpad like devices for such an app in the office. Our executives are still using blackberries to keep up with meeting schedules and emails. We have 3 teleconference capable meeting rooms in the building and some more around the region, and that is about it.
