Reporting potholes in Minneapolis? There's an app for that

As state and local governments seek new ways to deliver better services at lower costs, they are turning to mobile applications as an easy way to engage with their citizens. Minneapolis, for one, recently upgraded its municipal services through a new mobile application that moved the city’s network into the cloud.

The new KANA Lagan Open311 cloud infrastructure gives citizens the ability to report potholes, graffiti, broken street lights and other public safety issues from a variety of mobile devices that automatically are routed to relevant city departments, according to a news release from Minneapolis and KANA.

The free app from SeeClickFix is compatible with iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices, so most city residents can connect with the city government in near real time, which streamlines response times. Intelligent routing, based on levels of authority and service delivery targets, ensures that issues are reported instantly to the responsible office.

The service is hosted by KANA in the cloud via the software-as-a-service model (SaaS), eliminating the need for capital expenditure on hardware or software.

Lagan Open311 is built on the latest version of the Open311 specification and is maintained by KANA in the cloud to remain current with upgrades of the Open311 standard when they are released.

In addition, Lagan Open311 supports the transmission of photos and GPS information so that the precise description and location of potholes, graffiti, street-light outages and other issues can be pinpointed in a format that an in-house system can track, the announcement said.

Lagan Open311 also allows citizens to track how their issues are resolved on their devices without having to call a contact center, which helps minimize call volumes.
