DCO on tablet

Defense personnel can now take meetings on their Apple devices

Carahsoft Technology and the Defense Connect Online (DCO) Team recently announced  that the newest release of the DCO Connect Mobile App is available for iOS devices for free at Apple’s App Store. This follows the recent release of the app for Android devices.  So now even more Defense Department employees and military personnel can collaborate securely online.

The new app allows users to start and end meetings, manage participants, control all active pods, present content, videoconference and use emoticons for such actions as raising a hand and agreeing or disagreeing. It supports the iPad, iPad2, iPad3; iPhone 4 and 4 S; and iPod touch (third-generation minimum recommended). It runs on iOS 4.3 and later versions, although DCO recommends Version 5.x or higher.

DCO was launched in 2007, after the conclusion of a typical pilot period. During the pilot, however, leaders discovered that DCO was being used daily by many employees and so decided not to shut it down, perform an assessment, and re-launch — as is typical for a pilot program. Instead, DCO was kept running, and it has been running ever since.

Since then, the level of usage has climbed to staggering levels. In 2012, Carahsoft logged more than 562 million minutes of Web conferencing, including both non-classified and secret-level uses. That’s one minute for every attendee, assuming a meeting with 20 participants will rack up 20 meeting minutes for every actual minute that passes.

Even so, that massive figure would be equal to more than 1,069 people attending a solid year-long meeting. Of course, with over 800,000 users, the meetings they actually had were probably a lot shorter.

With the new mobile-based apps and possible cloud implementation in the future, it’s only going to expand from there. Users can find out more about DCO as well as get success stories and tips on how to use its features at its Facebook page.
