Forensic software extracts iPhone data – even with iOS 8 encryption

As smartphone manufacturers are making it more difficult for law enforcement to extract data from encrypted phones and tablets, a new product offers a way to access a suspect’s smartphone data.

Passware Inc., a provider of password recovery, decryption and evidence discovery software for computer forensics, announced the latest version of its Passware Kit Forensic, which the company says can extract iPhone and iPad data even with the new iOS 8 encryption upgrades.

The firm says Passware Kit Forensic can acquire full iPhone, iPad and iPod backups from iCloud provided that the Apple ID credentials are known. The backups are downloaded in iTunes and plain readable formats. All versions of iOS, including the latest 8.0.2, are supported.

The downloaded data presents the full iOS backup and includes all call, messaging and browsing history, photos and videos, contacts and applications.

Passware describes Kit Forensic as an electronic evidence discovery solution that reports all password-protected items on a computer and gains access to these items using decryption and password recovery algorithms.

"By removing the ability to bypass an iPhone's passcode physically, coupled with the expanded use of Apple devices and iCloud by professionals and consumers, currently the only forensic solution is accessing data from iCloud,” said Dmitry Sumin, CEO of Passware.

These new capabilities will help “arm forensic professionals with the latest advances in decryption, including those that provide an effective workaround for Apple devices and allow for quick access of the data associated with them."

Passware Kit Forensic is available directly from Passware and a network of resellers worldwide. The price is $995 with one year of free updates.
