DISA comm kits offer secure mobile access
Defense Department mobile users will now be able to make classified voice, video and data calls and access the Secret IP Router Network (SIPRNet) through the Internet with the DOD Enterprise Classified Travel Kit Gateways (DECTK-GW). Initially available only to select users, the travel kits are now available to users DOD-wide.
Two kits are currently approved to operate with DECTK-GW, and a third is expected to be available later this summer.
- The Executive Voice Kit weighs 18 pounds and allows users to make classified calls or access the SIPRNet.
- The Executive Communications Kit weighs 12 pounds and allows for concurrent classified voice and data use.
- The Secure Flyaway Kit is expected to be available by Q4 FY 2015. It permits concurrent voice, video, and data use, and allows access to multiple classified and unclassified domains; it weighs 19 pounds.
With the kit, a user connects to the Defense Enterprise Computing Center-hosted DECTK infrastructure through a hard connection to any Ethernet port, the built-in wireless broadband router, or a USB modem air card, DOD said in its announcement. The user then authenticates using a crypto ignition key and a username/password for voice, or a SIPRNet hard token for data.
“All of the kits use High Assurance Internet Protocol Encryptor devices to provide defense-in-depth protection to the DISN and the kit itself,” said Army Maj. Joy Thomas, the Defense Information Systems Agency’s DECTK program manager.DECTK-GW expands upon and replaces the Joint Communications Support Element (JCSE)-developed and managed Executive Voice Kit, which offered only secure voice capability by providing users with both SIPRNet access and classified voice. DECTK-GW also brings more robust failover, security, and service support features.
During the next two months, DISA will transition JSCE users to the DECTK-GW infrastructure. Once that transition is complete, the program will take new customers.
Travel kit prices range from $13,500 to $30,000.
