Office 365 gets additional email protections

Government agencies running Office 365 can now take advantage of Exchange Online Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), a new email filtering service that provides additional protection against malicious attachments and links.
The finalized service is now available for Office 365 commercial and “multi-tenant” government customers, Microsoft announced. The ATP solution will be available to nonprofit, education and government community cloud Office 365 tenants "at a later date."
ATP extends the protections of Microsoft's Exchange Online Protection service, which provides spam and malware protections for $1 per user per month. The ATP solution has three components.
The safe attachment feature protects against unknown malware and viruses, and provides better zero-day protection. All messages and attachments that don’t have a known virus/malware signature are routed to a special hypervisor environment, where machine learning and analysis is used to detect malicious intent.
The safe links feature proactively protects users if they click a malicious link, dynamically blocking unsafe URLs while good links can be accessed.
The URL trace capability lets IT managers track individual malicious links users may have clicked in messages.
The ATP service can be used with the Exchange Online service or with premises-based Exchange Server implementations. However, using ATP with premises-based servers also requires having Exchange Online Protection turned on for "inbound email filtering," according to a Microsoft FAQ.
The service is available to government customers at $1.75 per user per month.
