Wearable gateway bridges responder devices

Emergency situations can bring police, emergency medical technicians and fire fighters to a confined and chaotic space and lead to bevy of problems,  often involving communications. Public safety workers carry a number of devices in the field, but typically these tools don’t easily communicate with each other, or with other agencies or command centers.

Mutualink is trying to address those disconnects, and improve emergency responders’ situational awareness with its Wearable Smart Gateway. The WSG reduces response times by bridging critical equipment such as body cameras, locator beacons, handheld sensors and devices transmitting voice, data, video, sensor and location information through a secure wide-area network.

Because the WSG is small and light, a first responder can carry it on an equipment belt. From that perch, it can receive data from the responder’s devices, which can be shared through Mutualink’s secure multimedia network. Potential use cases for the WSG include real-time video streaming from body cameras, first responder personal health diagnosis and multi-location crisis management, the company said.

The WSG is the first in a group of devices Mutualink is releasing in the Internet of Things in public safety field, in an effort to give first responders next-generation equipment to help save lives. WSG will also work with FirstNet, the nationwide wireless communications network for public safety that is in development.

The WSG was recently used in the public safety broadband JerseyNet network test, where agencies were able to receive information and videos via workstations and mobile devices.
