NY releases See Something, Send Something app

In an effort to thwart potential terrorist attacks, New York has announced the release of the See Something, Send Something app that lets users who spot suspicious activity, such as an unattended backpack or briefcase in a public place, send a photo or message to authorities. The message is routed to the New York State Intelligence Center, after which local police assess the situation and deploy stronger efforts if needed.

If a user does not have mobile connectivity when filing a report or photo, the service will send the information as soon as connectivity returns. Users are also encouraged to call 911 in addition to sending a report if they see something suspicious. In addition, the app also explains what to look for and when to report suspicious activity.

The app, which is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, is also available in Colorado, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia, where it routes information to the appropriate fusion center.  It can be downloaded for free for both iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.

“This app works just like a traditional telephone crime tip line or hotline, except it is available with the touch of a finger on a handheld device,” said New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico.  “The crime-solving, tip-sharing process is evolving and so are the New York State Police.”
