Survey: DevOps helps agencies better manage app life cycles

Survey: DevOps helps agencies better manage app life cycles

What: Enhancing Efficiency: How DevOps Helps Accelerate Agency Agility.

Why: According to this MeriTalk report, 80 percent of federal IT budgets go to legacy system life support, making it difficult for agencies to create new applications. DevOps can help move software from concept to operation.

Findings: Of the 100 federal IT managers surveyed, 38 percent said they have adopted DevOps to help manage app life cycles, and 48 percent said they plan to use DevOps within the next five years.

IT managers that are using DevOps are seeing results, with 74 percent reporteding reduced cost and risk of project failure, 76 percent reporting faster app delivery and 84 percent reporting improved efficiency. Despite these results there are still some struggles for federal agencies regarding security, IT budget restraints and lack of the agile infrastructure DevOp requires.

Takeaway: While more agencies are embracing DevOps, outdated infrastructure and security concerns present roadblocks to some agencies. The future looks bright, however; 78 percent of respondents said they believe DevOps will help their agency innovate more quickly.
