NYC offers free software to city students

New York City public school students will now have free access to software, thanks to a partnership between the city and Microsoft.

Students and families will be able to download Office 2016, Office for Mac 2016 and the Office 365 mobile apps, all of which are part of Microsoft’s Office 365 education offering.

Schools that already license Microsoft Office through the Academic Volume Licensing program can include an Office 365 ProPlus subscription for all students, according to the program’s FAQ page.  Office 365 ProPlus can run on PCs and Windows tablets with Windows 7 or higher and Macs with Mac OS X 10.6 or higher.

Office 365 ProPlus comes with a full version of Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and more.  There is no cost for up to five downloads on personal computers, up to five tablets and up to five phones.

“Every student needs the proper tools to be successful in school,” said city Councilman James Vacca, who chairs the council's committee on technology.  “We are long past the days where well-rounded computer skills were optional.  By providing free software to NYC school children, we are ensuring that every student will have the opportunity to become proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the rest of the Microsoft package.”

Families can download the software by providing a phone number and student birth date that matches information held by the child’s school.
