Temporary fix delivers big gains for Marine Corps logistics system

The Marines are finding that a temporary fix is offering permanent dividends. 

In preparation for a major update to the Global Combat Support System-Marine Corps, the Temporary R11 Instance, or TRI, was released to keep the project on schedule and the users connected to GCSS-MC, which gives Marines integrated logistics information for managing supply and maintenance.

The Release 12 update includes modernizing both the server software and hardware for GCSS-MC.

“We created a new hosting environment by cloning the current GCSS-MC environment and its associated data located in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and installing it on brand new hardware at a new site at Camp Lejeune,” said Dimitrios Glitzos, a product manager on the program team.

Four upgrades were planned for the Release 12 update to GCSS-MC, with three delivered to the Marines early with TRI. 

“The good news about TRI is of the four milestones necessary for the R12 upgrade, three were planned in this release,” GCSS-MC Program Manager Dave Hansen said. “We purchased new hardware, installed new server operating systems, and upgraded the databases that store Marine Corps logistics data. The only item not available is the R12 software update.”

Since going online, TRI has exceeded expectations.

“We’ve seen a tremendous uptick in the speed of the system and the number of users being able to run sessions at the same time,” Maj. Kevin Simmons, a logistics project officer, said. “Before TRI, reports sometimes took hours to generate. We’ve seen times for those same reports reduced to minutes, and in some cases seconds.”

Feedback from users will be used to help improve the application prior to its official release, with TRI active until the full migration is finished.
