18F pilots digital acquisition training with FBI, Treasury

The 18F digital services team is helping federal agencies jumpstart innovative acquisition practices with a training program focused on digital acquisition and human-centered design.
The General Services Administration-based 18F first announced its Digital Acquisition Accelerator pilot in March that aimed to improve procurement of digital services and products. by increasing skills, changing processes and policies, and increasing collaboration with innovative partners. The team recently chose the FBI and the Department of Treasury to be the first participants, according to the 18F blog.
Groups of individuals from each agency will get six to eight months of basic training in human-centered design, agile methodologies, open innovation and modular contracting. They will use what they learn to complete two digital acquisitions with help from the pilot program team.
That training team includes experts from 18F, the Presidential Innovation Fellows program and the U.S. Digital Service, and will train agencies in a range of domains. These include acquisition and procurement; policy and law; product strategy; agile project management; architecture and engineering; user research and design; data management; and cybersecurity.
“If each agency had its own cadre of highly trained, cross-functional digital experts, the value, quality, cost, and timeliness of digital and technology acquisitions would improve,” 18F staffers wrote in the March announcement of the pilot. The goal is to leave participating agencies with an established internal group of digital acquisition experts.
After its alpha phase with Treasury and the FBI, 18F aims to expand the training to other agencies. Agencies can learn how to apply to participate here.
