Hyperconverged solution streamlines transit IT

With about a quarter of all workers in downtown San Francisco and Oakland relying on public transportation for their daily commute to work, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit’s system processes data on 129 million trips a year, in addition to that generated by internal applications.
BART wanted to simplify the management of its IT environment with a scalable cloud-based solution that improved service delivery and minimized its data center footprint.
The transit agency replaced its legacy storage-area network and its network and compute infrastructure with the hyperconverged Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform, which allowed it to consolidate operations and deployment. The Nutanix solution powers BART’s Oracle-based human resources, finance and mission-critical maintenance systems, as well as 800 virtual desktops, with plans to scale to 2,000.
With the Nutanix solution BART was able to halve the number of staff managing its IT environment, allowing them to focus on delivering applications and services rather than managing the data center. It was able to reduce its datacenter footprint by 67 percent, which also helped save power and reduce BART’s carbon footprint, Nutanix officials said.
According to BART CIO Ravi Misra, when the transit system tried to build its own in-house enterprise cloud, it found it needed products from six different vendors. “Nutanix was able to deliver what those six different vendors could and more,” he said.
The solution has helped BART focus on enterprise applications and deploy workloads 30 percent faster.
