Army eyes blockchain for trusted communications

To ensure that the data on which warfighters and their automated systems depend can be trusted, the Army's Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate (S&TCD) is looking to novel technologies that will secure data flowing over terrestrial and satellite networks.

For its Information Trust program, S&TCD envisions technologies that leverages machine learning and  blockchain for user authentication and sharing trust information. Specifically, it expects the system to have the following attributes:

  1. A machine learning-based service that identifies and blocks malicious structured and unstructured messages.
  2. A lightweight private blockchain that tracks the provenance of messages through the network and automatically detects message modification.
  3. Blockchain consensus algorithms that can be used in the field where bandwidth is limited and intermittent.
  4. A blockchain-based authentication service that tracks user trust values – compiled from machine learning, user/system data and network threat history -- and allows dynamic removal or addition of users to the blockchain during its lifecycle.
  5. An architecture that delivers real-time visual trust scores to the warfighter upon the receipt of messages or data.

The request for information was issued May 29, but a May 2 industry briefing said the Information Trust broad agency announcement would have an estimated value of $10 to $15 million between FY20 through FY24.
