Virginia lays data foundation for smart communities

Virginia announced plans to develop a statewide data governance policy to streamline data sharing and protection among the commonwealth's 63 executive branch agencies, over 130 communities, more than 20 public universities and many other independent state-funded entities.

The Data Governance Policy will address issues of data sharing, security and privacy, enabling more seamless data sharing and a common framework critical for the evolution of smart communities.

Virginia Chief Data Officer Carlos Rivero announced the policy and said the state will partner with the Center for Innovative Technology, a state-funded nonprofit leading smart community initiatives for the commonwealth, and Smart Cities Council, a global leader in the development of smart cities and communities.  A complete assessment of the current status of data governance throughout the commonwealth by will be developed by late 2019, and the Smart Cities Council’s Activator program will connect survey results to a vast array of best practices and lessons learned from data governance efforts across the globe.

“A comprehensive policy means our communities will be able to rapidly take advantage of a wide variety of data resources at the local, state and national level without having to reinvent data sharing agreements or difficult policies around data privacy and security,” CIT CEO Ed Albrigo said.

City and county representatives should email [email protected] if they are interested in participating in this process.
