USDOT launches AV test initiative, data platform

The Department of Transportation is building an online platform for federal, state and local  governments and automated vehicle manufacturers to post data on AV testing activities so information can be standardized, coordinated and shared with the public.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing (AV TEST) Initiative’s  platform will show AV testing locations along with the details on the various types of motor vehicles — cars, low-speed shuttles, trucks and driverless electric delivery vehicles – being evaluated. It is also expected to include testing activity data, including dates, frequency, vehicle counts and routes, the announcement said.

Information can be submitted by stakeholders involved in the safe AV development and testing, including departments of motor vehicles and city governments.  Industry participants may include developers, manufacturers, suppliers, operators and testers.

The AV TEST Initiative is also holding virtual public events where government, industry and academic experts will discuss AV opportunities and challenges and the role of on-road testing in AV systems development and safe deployment.

California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah are currently participating along with Beep, Cruise, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Local Motors, Navya, Nuro, Toyota, Uber and Waymo.
