Researchers smash internet speed record

Researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology have demonstrated long-haul data transmission at 319 terabits/sec over 1,800 miles, double the previous attainable speed.

The researchers used several wavelengths to send the data at the same time over four cores, or glass fibers – a method known as wavelength-division multiplexing, according to a report in Interesting Engineering. The data signals are also boosted by optical amplifiers.

What’s more, the researchers sent the data over existing fiber optic infrastructure – albeit with a few enhancements.

“Crucially, the novel four-core optical fiber possesses the same diameter as a conventional single-core fiber, bracketing the protective cladding around it. In other words,” the article said, “integrating the new method into existing infrastructure will be far simpler than other technological overhauls to societal information systems.”
