Senate calls for studying data center power consumption

In the same month as the launch of the Environment Protection Agency's Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool, Sens. George Allen (R - VA), Jeff Bingaman (D - NM) and Barbara Boxer (D - CA) have introduced a bill that would task the EPA with studying energy efficiency in the data center. Introduced July 18, S. 3684 calls for a report, to be carried out by the EPA's Energy Star program, on how much electricity data centers consume and what savings could be obtained by moving to more energy-efficient servers. The study would look at data centers run both by the federal government and private industry.
