Names for popular domains up for bid at public auction.

The registry for the domain is the .ME Registry in Montenegro,although the domain's largest registrar is U.S.-basedGoDaddy.com. Registration opened in May with an initial one-monthsunrise period for trademark holders. Registration for the generalpublic opened with a land-rush auction in June, and within twoweeks, the 100,000 mark had been hit.

Who would have thought Montenegro was so popular? Since
registration for the country's top-level domain opened in
May, more than 100,000 names have been registered with the .me
extension, making it the Internet's fastest-selling
debut.


One name, insure.me, sold for $68,000 in the initial
auction.


Organizers of this week's domain industry conference in
New York expect names with .me extensions to be hot items in an
auction set for Sept. 25.


The greatest interest in the .me extension is in
English-speaking countries, which offers a clue to its popularity.
The United States accounts for 71 percent of the names registered
so far, with Great Britain accounting for 6 percent and Canada 4
percent.


A variety of names are expected to be popular when offered for
sale at the TRAFFIC Conference, hosted by the World Association of
Domain Name Developers. As the name of the conference implies, it
is all about driving traffic to Web sites, and the personal pronoun
is proving catchy. Among the names being offered are:



  • Date.me

  • Buy.me

  • Love.me

  • Play.me

  • Ask.me

  • Show.me

  • Kiss.me

  • Watch.me

  • Loan.me

  • Rent.me








It was during the land-rush auction that the insure.me domain
name sold for $68,000.


The domain auction company Moniker will be handling the Sept. 25
auction, scheduled for live bidding from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT at
the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott in New York. Bids can also be submitted online.
