The QTS Federal Cloud is an infrastructure-as-a-service system built on technologies that federal agencies are familiar with, including VMware, EMC and Cisco.

QTS Realty Trust has launched a secure cloud infrastructure designed to meet many of the mandates federal agencies are facing, including the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative, Cloud First policy and IT Shared Services strategy, company officials said.  

The QTS Federal Cloud is an infrastructure-as-a-service solution built on technologies that federal agencies are familiar with, including VMware virtualization software, EMC storage devices and Cisco networking gear. This makes it easier for agencies to integrate the QTS Federal Cloud with private VMware cloud environments, QTS officials said. 

The QTS cloud provides infrastructure services, compute, storage, network and security components. A self-managed user interface lets government IT administrators control aspects of their virtual data centers while QTS manages and monitors the cloud-based infrastructure.

The cloud infrastructure is located in mega-data centers in Richmond and Atlanta. The QTS Federal Cloud  adheres to strict virtual and physical security protocols and is expected to achieve Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program security accreditation in mid-2014, the company said.

Currently, 10 vendors and one government agency are now authorized under FedRAMP to operate cloud services for all or some federal agencies. The providers include Akamai, Amazon Web Services, AT&T, Autonomic Resources, CGI Federal, Concurrent Technologies, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft and the Agriculture Department. 

QTS, a provider of managed services, operates 10 data centers in seven states. The company’s federal systems group helps agencies design and implement IT infrastructure that meet performance, security and compliance needs.
