The House plans to migrate public-facing Drupal websites to the cloud to improve security and reliability.

The House wants to upgrade the websites of members, committees and caucuses to the cloud.

In a request for proposals posted Aug. 25, the House’s Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) said it is looking for a platform-as-a-service provider that has been approved under the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program to manage the migration.

The goal is to strengthen the security, reliability and scalability of the House’s public-facing web environment by shifting day-to-day operations to a PaaS cloud provider.

The CAO outlined a four-phase approach for migrating its internally hosted Drupal-based sites to the cloud.

The first phase involves initial planning and inventory, including meetings with House personnel to understand the applications, technology and infrastructure layouts of the websites; connectivity and systems integration requirements; and procedures for software and systems maintenance.

Once the cloud provider understands the House’s current operations, the company will map and assess each website's infrastructure and make recommendations for redesign efforts as part of the migration.

The last two phases involve planning for the cloud migration with key House personnel and providing a comprehensive summary report with migration challenges, service capabilities and a roadmap for each site based on the most effective path for the cloud transition.

The CAO is looking for a solution that will also address pain points in the current site management process, including continuing Drupal security updates and establishing resources to maintain and secure performance across all websites involved in the shift. The company will also be responsible for managing multiple Drupal codebases used by House websites, ensuring proper access to vendors and supporting customization efforts for particular websites.
