IBM’s z16 mainframe is designed for hybrid cloud environments, features an on-chip AI accelerator and what the company calls the industry’s first quantum-safe system.

The IBM mainframe, the transaction-processing workhorse government health care and financial organizations depend on, is laying on some advanced features. 

Announced April 5, IBM’s z16 mainframe is designed for hybrid cloud environments, features an on-chip AI accelerator and what the company calls the industry’s first quantum-safe system. 

The z16’s integrated on-chip AI accelerator, the IBM Telum Processor, delivers “latency-optimized inferencing,” which allows enterprise workloads to analyze real-time transactions at scale so organizations can flag fraudulent transactions as they occur, the company said in its announcement.

The z16 also uses lattice-based cryptography, an approach IBM said helps protect data and systems against current and future threats, including “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks that can lead to future disclosure of currently protected sensitive data. A secure boot feature prevents bad actors from injecting malware into the boot process, and a hardware security module provides both classical and quantum-safe cryptographic technology for use cases requiring information confidentiality, integrity and non-repudiation, the company said. 

The company also announced the IBM Z Security and Compliance Center, which collects system  evidence to be used in an audit report, speeding up audit preparation and assisting with compliance management.  The IBM Z Flexible Capacity for Cyber Resiliency allows clients to fully automate the swap from participating IBM z16 production systems to backup systems at different sites. 

IBM z16 will be generally available on May 31.
