The Ohio Supercomputer Center announced Ascend, a new high-performance computing cluster to support artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data and data analytics.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), a statewide resource that provides supercomputing services and expertise to university researchers and industries in the state, announced that Ascend, a new high-performance computing cluster to support artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data and data analytics would come online in fall 2022.

Ascend—which features Dell PowerEdge servers, 48 AMD EPYC CPUs and 96 NVIDIA A100 80GB GPUs networked with NVIDIA’s NVLink and Quantum 200Gb/s InfiniBand—will triple OSC’s capacity for AI, modeling and simulation. It will be the center’s first computing cluster devoted entirely to intensive GPU processing, OSC officials said. 

"Over the last few years, OSC has experienced a growing demand for its GPU resources," OSC Associate Director Doug Johnson said. "By establishing a cluster focused on analysis of very large datasets quickly, support for classes of AI/ML applications that can’t run on our current systems, and simulations that require the fastest GPUs, OSC will better meet the needs of these clients while ensuring the prompt processing of requests for our existing clusters."

An increasing number of OSC clients are involved in AI/ML research, and Ascend will help meet their computing demands. One project—called , the AI Institute for Intelligent Cyberinfrastructure with Computational Learning in the Environment—, led by The Ohio State University, “will advance plug-and-play AI that is easy to use by scientists across a wide range of domains, promoting the democratization of AI,” according to the National Science Foundation award abstract. 

OSC's client services team will evaluate requests to run projects on Ascend, which will be accessible through OSC's OnDemand web portal. OSC plans to announce a more detailed timeline for the Ascend launch and availability this summer.
