Juniper Networks' Gateway platforms have earned Federal Information Processing Standard certification for government procurement security features, company officials announced today.

The Juniper Networks' Secure Services Gateway 5 (SSG 5), SSG 20, SSG 520M and SSG 550M; Integrated Services Gateway 1000 and 2000; and NS-5200 and NS-5400 security appliances have received FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certification, company officials said.

FIPS 140-2 Level 2 requirements include tamper-evident physical security or pick-resistant locks, role-based authentication and software cryptopgraphy in multiuser time-shared systems when used in conjunction with a C2-level or equivalent trusted operating system.

Federal guidelines require that most government agencies buy computer security products that meet the FIPS and Common Criteria benchmarks. The FIPS 140-2 certification, administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, defines the security requirements that must be satisfied by cryptographic modules used in security systems that protects unclassified information within information technology systems.

The Juniper Networks Secure Services Gateway tools provide local- and wide-area network connectivity and offer a set of optional unified threat management security features designed to protect networks from worms, viruses, Trojans and other security threats.

The NS series products, NS-5200 and NS-5400, are firewall and virtual private network security appliances. The ISG 1000 and ISG 2000 platforms have firewalls that provide optional intrusion prevention system functionality.
