The Pentagon last week held its fifth annual IT Job Shadow Day, giving local high school students a chance to see what a job in government's information technology workforce looks like.

The Pentagon last week held its fifth annual IT Job Shadow Day, giving 50 local high school students a chance to see what a job in government's information technology workforce looks like.

The one-day Feb. 3 seminar at the Pentagon, sponsored by the Army, Air Force and Defense Department's chief information officer, is part of DOD's long-range recruiting goal to create a pipeline of students who want to become future employees, said Joyce France, director of CIO management services.

Students listened to cybersecurity or social media briefings, toured the DOD Network Monitoring Instruction Center, learned how to apply for federal jobs and generally got a feel for the kind of information technology work that's available within the department. Defense Information Systems Agency representatives talked about cyber defense, simulation experts talked about computer crime and forensics, and officials from the Defense Technical Information Center talked about the DOD Technopedia, according to a report posted on the American Forces Press Service website.

"This is an opportunity to crack the door a little bit to give students a peek inside the Pentagon," France said.

Sponsors included the Army, Air Force, Marines, the National Security Agency, Naval Sea Systems Command, the DOD Education Activity and Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command headquarters.
