The National Association of Counties and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center are encouraging counties to enroll in the free cyber protection program.

The National Association of Counties is working with the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) to encourage counties to sign up for MS-ISAC’s free suite of cybersecurity services. Some 1,500 counties already are taking advantages of the center's offerings.

MS-ISAC’s cybersecurity program provides vulnerability management, IP and domain monitoring, notifications of possible compromises, tools for simplifying security updates, secure portals for communication and document sharing at no cost to counties.  The program offers real-time monitoring and early threat detection through MS-IAC’s security operations center and threat response with its computer emergency response team.

There are 674 counties that have registered for MS-ISAC’s network monitoring and alerts, and  887 counties have signed up with the  Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis  Center, which focuses on the election security environment.

“The free service sends out alerts that tell officials "what is going on, the nature of  the problem,  possible solutions and how serious one should take it,” said Alan Shark, executive director and CEO of the Public Technology Institute, which works directly with NACo under a strategic partnership. Shark said NACo has been meeting with MS-ISAC officials over the past month to determine how to drive value to counties.

“We start with the assumption that  everyone has basic protections installed,” Shark said. “MS-ISAC offers another layer of protection with the monitoring, alerts that are pushed out on a 24 hour basis and a helpline.”
