The state is looking to help local contractors comply with Defense Department cyber standards – an effort which could have knock-on effects for state and local government contracting in Ohio.

Ohio wants to help its businesses compete for federal contracts by helping them achieve Defense Department Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification.

The CMMC requirement calls for businesses doing business with DOD to conform to a framework of cybersecurity protection standards developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. that The goal is to safeguard the businesses and sensitive, unclassified information stored in their systems from advanced and evolving threats. While CMMC primarily applies to the defense industrial base, its security requirements could also have benefits for Ohio's state and local governments.  

Previously, Ohio funded consultants to help businesses prepare for the cybersecurity requirements expected to go into effect in 2025. Now, through its Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, Ohio wants to offer local businesses that have found CMMC “complicated and difficult to understand,” a more expansive program, according to a recent request for proposals from the Ohio University. 

This new Cybersecurity Assistance Project will prepare Ohio businesses to comply with two of the three levels of certification required by CMMC 2.0, the latest version of the framework. Businesses seeking Level 1 CMMC, or self-certification, will require 15 hours of consulting to meet the 17 controls. Those seeking Level 2 certification, which requires third-party certification, will need up to 60 hours to help them determine appropriate upgrades and changes required to meet the 110 controls. 

The program would be delivered through the Ohio University Procurement Technical Assistance Centers. The nationwide network of PTACs, led by DOD, provides a variety of services, such as bid preparation assistance and review, help with military specifications, one-on-one training and more.

Proposals are due Dec. 14.
