With DISA project, big data plans get bigger

DISA’s big data solution plan promises warfighters ‘unparalleled visibility’ into the DOD Information Network.
The Defense Information Systems Agency is casting its net for companies to help extend the Defense Department’s big data and analytics operations across the defense enterprise.
In a recent request to industry, DISA outlined plans to broaden DOD’s big data and situational awareness capabilities in ways that “cross organizational and systems boundaries for the warfighter.”
The resulting DISA big data solution would help integrate big data operations currently deployed in several different production environments. In its place, DISA wants to establish a standard data architecture with big data, provisioning and security features acting as a centralized data storage repository.
The DISA big data solution would support analytics that could provide greater visibility into DoD Information Network (DODIN) environment and allow tactical decisions to be made using a richer and broader set of data, according to the RFI.
The big data solution comprises two key technical components: a data analytic Hadoop-based architecture interoperable with National Security Agency and Intelligence Community enterprise IT, and an Ozone Widget Framework that provides cyber-situational awareness.
The solution aims to support both unclassified and classified environments and act as DOD’s “recommended platform for data analytics against normalized, tagged, ingest of records.” The analytics engine would also produce reports and visualizations for both historical and near real time analysis, DISA said.
The agency is currently working to integrate processes and procedures for end-to-end joint analytics across agencies and services, some of which have not yet been defined. “We are currently creating flowcharts for the various analytic development methods [and] combining them with automated form capabilities,” according to the RFI.
Contract vehicles available to the government to acquire the systems and services, said DISA, include ENCORE II, GSA MOBIS, NIH, NASA SEWP and Federal Supply Schedules, according to DISA.
