StreetLight Data’s EV Mode gives mobility planners detailed data that can help them efficiently build out EV infrastructure.

Cities looking to get a better handle on rolling out electric vehicle charging infrastructure can now gain some insight from StreetLight Data’s EV Mode analytics service.

Launched Jan. 10, EV Mode provides transportation infrastructure planners granular data to help them with the equitable buildout of EV infrastructure. It features data on where EV drivers travel, stop and charge; what times they drive in residential and business districts; and how fast they drive, how far they go to find a charging station and how driving patterns change over time.

StreetLight collects real-time data from smartphones, connected cars and trucks, road sensors and weather forecasts, as well as data from GPS navigation- and location-based services. It also incorporates land use and demographic information, down to the city-block level. Its machine learning algorithm helps create a “statistically robust portrait of everything that's moving,” Kevin Hathaway, Streetlight’s vice president of services, said in a webcast. That includes not just vehicles but also bicycles, e-bikes and pedestrians.

Cities deciding where to place EV charging stations can use the company’s service to gauge existing EV traffic, compare gas-powered traffic to EV traffic, see where people are charging and determine where demand is likely to increase to ensure that charges are placed equitably.

The company’s metrics have been leveraged by several state and local transportation departments, including those in Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia and Washington state as well as Indianapolis, Orlando, Los Angeles and others. San Jose, California, used StreetLight data in its decision support system, a software tool that uses big data and analytics to help city officials determine the next best move to improve mobility.
