This month, the office expects to release a plan for its business enterprise architecture and modernization.Both are the result of a 60-day deadline Gilligan imposed on the new office so that initial drafts can be released soon and updated in the spring.'The intent is to take what has been a lot of individual efforts and start to pull them together in something that is integrated,' Gilligan said late last month at an executive breakfast sponsored by Federal Sources Inc. of McLean, Va.Gilligan said the Air Force is following the Defense Department's efforts to build a financial enterprise architecture and consolidate 2,300 disparate systems.'DOD produced a business enterprise architecture so we hired some [DOD] support to help us,' he added.Gilligan said the Global Combat Support System'Air Force underpins the service's business enterprise architecture effort. He said officials would build the architecture with the agency's combat support mission in mind.GCSS-AF collects data from various combat support information systems and feeds a fused data picture to military officials across 22 areas, including supply, transportation, personnel, communications, maintenance and acquisition.Over the past year, the Air Force has also been consolidating its servers. Gilligan said that by the end of this year, the Air Force would be 95 percent done with those efforts.'We are moving very rapidly to a Web-based paradigm,' said Gilligan. 'We will field a common computing infrastructure.'. The Navy has awarded Appian Corp. of Vienna, Va., a multimillion-dollar contract to upgrade the Navy Knowledge Online enterprise portal with features that make it easier for users to form collaborative and interactive portal pages that can be specialized for specific users, groups and missions.The contract includes support and maintenance of the portal, the purchase of additional hardware, beta-testing an at-sea version of NKO and development of a classified version of the portal, the Navy Knowledge Online Secret IP Router Network.Appian will deploy the SIPRnet version for Navy directorates that perform classified work, including the Submarine Learning Center, Center for Naval Intelligence and Center for Naval Cryptology. The upgraded version features identity management and personalization technologies that will let every command, group and individual users share community portal pages, based on individual or group profiles.The Naval Education and Training Command chose the Appian Enterprise suite in July 2002 to power NKO. The command oversees training and educational opportunities for 350,000 active duty personnel. Today, NKO has more than 165,000 registered users.'The rapid adoption of Navy Knowledge Online further underscores the demand for an enterprisewide, lifelong-learning, personal-development and knowledge management portal, to support not only the Navy's education and training initiatives, but also the way it does business,' said Capt. James Kantner, Naval Personnel Development Command Knowledge manager. 'Navy Knowledge Online is quickly becoming the Navy's primary means of connecting sailors to the information and subject-matter expertise they need to be successful in their chosen careers, as well as to their peers, so that they can share and learn from each other's experiences.'
